The vase as a picture surface

The starting point for Herden's thin-walled, fully functional vases are cast porcelain plates. Without having built the finished form, she paints them with dyed porcelain slips - sometimes gesturally expressive, colorfully monochrome, or with graphic accents. Cylindrical objects are then assembled from them, resulting in an intuitive interplay of color and form, plate particles and fragments; transparently glazed on the inside, the polished, matte porcelain body remains on the outside.
