Balance in black and white

A master of her craft: Karin Bablok uses the vessel as a canvas for black glaze paintings in various styles: precisely executed lines and circular areas interrelate, connecting the interior with the exterior of the vessel.
When fired at 1400°C in a gas kiln, the Fürstenberg clay produces a slightly glossy and translucent finish.
The porcelain vessels in another group of works are coated with a velvety-soft Ru glaze reflecting “the color of the sky
after the rain,” which Bablok brought back from a residency in Jingdezhen. The thicker walls required for this open up a completely new formal language: bulbous yet restrained by the shaping of the edges, gestural painting with floral motifs becomes the defining element here.
